KIQ President Delivers Deputation Supporting Multicultural Inclusion at Ipswich City Council

Antony Kamau, on behalf of Kenyans in Queensland Inc, delivered a formal deputation at an Ordinary Meeting of Ipswich City Council, addressing the importance of extending the temporary Ipswich Multicultural Advisory Committee.

The matter was presented to Council for consideration on the day, with the deputation highlighting the committee’s critical role in supporting multicultural engagement, representation, and inclusive decision-making within the city.

Advocating for a Permanent Multicultural Advisory Committee

In his address, Mr Kamau spoke to the value of sustained community consultation and the need for structured, ongoing platforms that allow diverse communities to contribute meaningfully to civic processes. His submission emphasised that multicultural advisory bodies are essential to fostering social cohesion, mutual understanding, and equitable participation across Ipswich’s growing and diverse population.

The deputation was delivered with clarity and conviction and is available for public viewing via Ipswich City Council TV on YouTube, at the 22 minutes and 57 seconds mark.

Council Resolution and Unanimous Support

Following the deputation, Pye Augustine moved a motion proposing that the Multicultural Advisory Committee be established as a permanent committee of Council. The motion received unanimous support from councillors, marking a significant milestone in advancing inclusive governance within the city.

This outcome reflects a shared commitment by Council to recognising and embedding multicultural voices in its advisory and decision-making structures.

Community Presence and Support

The deputation was further supported by the presence of Benny Bol, OAM, Chair of the Athiei Foundation, who attended the meeting in the public gallery. His attendance underscored the broad community interest and support for the matter under consideration.

A Positive Step Toward an Inclusive City

The unanimous resolution represents a meaningful step toward fostering a more inclusive, cohesive, and welcoming Ipswich. For Kenyans in Queensland Inc and its partners, the decision affirms the importance of advocacy, collaboration, and constructive engagement with local government.

KIQ acknowledges Ipswich City Council for its leadership and commitment to multicultural inclusion and looks forward to continued collaboration in strengthening community participation across the city.
